What the Funny is the story of Max, long-suffering owner of a struggling comedy theatre in Seattle. The theatre company struggles through the final weeks of preparation for their next show, and the only thing standing in their way is money, talent, ego, and the occasional murder.

What the Funny was put together by an award-winning team: Director Lynn Shelton and Director of Photography Ben Kasulke won the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 2006 Slamdance with We Go Way Back and the Special Jury Prize for Spirit of Independence for Humpday at Sundance in 2009. Creator Wayne Rawley is a prolific writer and a legend in the Seattle Fringe Theatre scene.

The soundtrack features original recordings from some of Seattle's favorite 'alt-everything' bands. Featuring members of 'Awesome', 'The Half Brothers', 'The Fog People', and Leeni, it is a cross-genre sampling of some of the city's most promising musicians.

This collaboration of some of the best of Seattle's Independent Film, Fringe Theatre and music scenes is part of a new wave of independent film. Designed to take advantage of Internet distribution and the growing influence of social networks, it was made as a series of ten-minute episodes. Each is a complete story in itself; each contributes to the eleven-episode narrative arc. It is a tightly woven story that shifts fluidly amongst an ensemble of the attention-starved, needy, neurotic characters that live to make strangers laugh.

Day 1 - Sunday

The cast of the Seattle-based comedy theater "Funny" arrive one Sunday morning for a company retreat only to find police tape around their front door and the chalk outline of a dead body. 

Will their new show - which is two weeks away from Opening Night - proceed as planned, or is the theater doomed?

Day 2 - Monday

Rehearsals continue for the as-yet-unnamed show coming up in less than two weeks at "Funny," meanwhile Max deals with a seemingly permanent chalk outline and is re-introduced to someone from his past.

Day 3 - Tuesday

The cast of "Funny," led by Olivier, discuss the show with less than two weeks until Opening Night. Meanwhile, Max discovers that a scout from Comedy Central has been invited which causes him much consternation.

Day 4 - Wednesday

Max is constantly interrupted by the cast of "Funny" while holding auditions for the upcoming stand-up night.

Day 5 - Thursday

Olivier leads an improv workshop, meanwhile Randy and Bisbee open up to Beverlia.

Day 6 - Friday

Stand-up night interrupts rehearsals for "Funny"'s latest show, and Max is shocked at Betsy's new act.

Day 8 - Sunday

Bennekin leads a fight clinic for the cast of "Funny," and Olivier finds a unique way to cure a hangover.

Day 9 - Monday

A new comedy club opening the same night as the show at "Funny" threatens to derail Opening Night - if the cast in-fighting doesn't derail it first.

Day 12 - Thursday

Tensions between the cast comes to a boil as Olivier's secret is revealed.
